Johnson & Johnson announced a definitive agreement to acquire Firefly Bio, a biotechnology advancing the Firelink degrader antibody conjugate (DAC) platform, on June 8th, 2026. The $1 billion, all-cash deal is expected to close later this year, according to a press release issued by Johnson & Johnson.
Firefly’s current DAC platform, Firelink, is designed to target KRAS-driven tumors, a mutation found in cancers that have historically been considered exceptionally hard to treat, according to today’s release. The platform aims to overcome limitations of existing treatment options via delivery of a highly selective protein degrader that can target KRAS-mutant cells while avoiding healthy ones.
“KRAS has notoriously been considered an undruggable target and patients with KRAS-driven cancers continue to face limited treatment options with survival measured in months, not years,” said John Reed, M.D., Ph.D., Executive Vice President, Innovative Medicine, Research & Development, Johnson & Johnson, in today’s release. “We believe the proprietary Firelink platform will overcome the limitations of current treatments and diversify our pipeline with preclinical candidates for treating multiple types of solid tumors.”
“From the beginning, our mission has been to push the boundaries of science to address some of the most challenging cancers. This next step enables us to advance that mission with the scale, expertise, and shared commitment needed to bring our work forward,” said Scott Hirsch, CEO, in a post on LinkedIn following the announcement. “We’re proud of what our team has built and grateful to everyone who has supported our journey. We’re equally excited about what lies ahead as we combine the talents of the great minds here at Firefly with Johnson & Johnson to advance our shared goal of redefining what’s possible in cancer treatment.”
Firefly was founded in February 2024, following a $94 million Series A financing round, with the stated goal of creating novel DAC platforms, a synthesis of ADC and protein degrader technologies. According to a 2024 press release announcing Firefly’s founding, DAC platforms aim to combine the favorable bioavailability and cell-specific targeting ability of ADCs, while maintaining the intracellular selectivity, protein knock down, and highly catalytic nature of protein degraders.
